  1. A lovely frosty morning on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands. This is the site of the Buck Bay Shellfish Farm. Toni Hermanson and Mark Wright have been farming oysters and clams on Mark's family property since the early 1940s. This family farm is also home to 17 ducks, 25 chickens and a large vegetable garden. In summer, you can choose your own oysters harvested that same day, and sit outside Toni's Shuck Shack with a dozen oysters or a cooked crab and just enjoy the view.

On my October visit, the warm morning sun was just reaching the fields and fall colored trees past the old barn, with frost covered grass in the shady foreground. On a low tide, the tideland was full of Canadian Geese, Sea Gulls and ducks, all voicing their pleasure at the exposed food options.

I began this painting with opaque washes (aureolin, viridian and rose madder) and then introduced darker pigment colors for detail and contrast. I enjoyed the curve of the road bringing the focus to the barn and two power poles. The streak of sunlight catching the overturned boat and tops of the beach rocks is dramatic moment in the unfolding day.
