Fort Worden Chinese Gardens

  2. A peaceful morning at this large pond, located on the Ft. Worden Washingotn State Park. I painted with Tom Shepherd as the fog off the Straights of Juan de Fuca filtered through the evergreen trees. We listened to bird calls of hawks, ravens and gulls, and later a group of swallows flitted across the surface of the water, catching bugs! The reflections were perfect images of what was on the land. Truly one of the most memorable plein air experiences I have ever had!

    Fort Worden was an active coast artillery post during WWI and WWII, and many of the buildings and gun emplacements are still intact. Apparently there is a plaque on the property:

    It reads: “CHINESE GARDENS". The Chinese comprised 20% of Port Townsend’s population. Here they operated truck gardens to sell produce door to door in town from double-decked wagons. Late 1890′s Early 1900′s.”
