Pt. White Beach Beauties

  1. These two boats pulled up on the beach have always intrigued me. I decided to paint them to get to know them better, and my first visit to the location was on a stormy gray day, and a second when the autumn sun was shining in order to get some cast shadows. I was surprised how much color the sailboat hull took on in the bright light.
I then contacted Reid Hansen who lives nearby, and knows the boat story, having grown up in a nearby home. The boats were owned by the Munro family, and enjoyed by George and Jim both of whom have passed on. The “home made” powerboat was built largely of driftwood on a hull built in the 1940’s. Reid said they took it up to the San Juan Islands as well as in local waters. The sailboat was built in the 1930’s, and pulled up on the beach in 1970. The engine is still on board.
The pair seem like a stately older couple, now retired to a lovely location where they can enjoy the sunsets and daily fluctuations of the tide. My thanks to Reid for telling me the history, and for care taking these delightful relics of past Bainbridge Island history. He put the boards up to keep the boat from falling over.
The location is the beach at Pt. White on Bainbridge.

  3. I received more information on the boats from Ralph Munro:
"The sailboat belonged to my Uncle. James Munro. It was named the Lady Eve and it made many wonderful trips to the San Juans and Gulf Islands. He also used it from time to time to commute to Bremerton and Port Orchard when he was Kitsap County Prosecutor. The other boat was built by my dad right there on the beach. He called it the Drif Wood because it was mostly made out of boards and lumber that he found on the beach. We have many happy memories of fishing in Port Madison in that boat. Also lots of picnics up the bay between Fletcher Bay and Westwood."
