In 1859, Great Britain and the U.S. agreed to a joint occupation of San Juan Island, while settling the location of the water boundary between the two countries. The English Camp is on a beautiful bay, with a rebuilt wooden blockhouse and other structures. In my painting, HMS Boxer, a steam gunboat, is at anchor in Garrison Bay. Manned by Royal Marines, the block house served as a place to lock up rowdy marines, more than a defense of the post. The post was abandoned in 1872, and is now part of a National Park. (17.5" x 11.5") $350
